Dont Hate on Boa
Over the summer I was working at a tent sale at one of my companies retail locations. I had spent about an hour helping a mother and daughter pick out a full snowboard set up for the daughter and we were just about finished. Of course, this is when the girls 16 year old brother and friend entered into the scene with plenty of opinions and no real technical knowledge of product.
Just about the first this that came out of the kids mouth was "oh...don't get boa on your boots". Of course I immediately asked him why, and sure enough he didn't seem to have an answer. I've noticed this alot over the seasons, kids (generally males) hating on the boa lacing system for reasons they don't know! Therefore, let me just take a moment to highlight some of the benefits of the boa lacing system.
In the 2003/2004 season, I bought my first pair of boa and since then I haven't looked back. Boa is simply a dial that winds a small wire that "laces" through the boot allowing the user to tighten the boot. The key here is that the rider does not have to have the strength to tighten the boot as tight as they would like, but simply turns the dial. This is great for women and kids, who cannot get the leverage over their laces with a traditional boot. Also, the boot stays tightened the entire day! There's no dealing with laces coming undone or having to double knot anything. In fact, if you take a few runs and the boot starts to feel loose just because of the materials breaking in, you can reach down with your gloves still on and give it a few cranks. At the end of the day, simply pop the dial outwards and your boots are now loose. It's very simple.
Improvements to the boa dial have also been made in the past seasons. Boa coiler allows the riders to pull the tongue of the boot out to slide their foot in, but have the wire wind itself back up once your foot is in and the tongue is no longer stretched. Therefore, you aren't cranking forever because of all the slack in the wire. Focus boa has also been created, where instead of jsut one dial there are 2 or 3 that control different sections of the boot. This allows the rider to keep some parts of their boot tight, and other parts loose if preferred.
Overall, many of those against the boa dial have not tried it. Some people just prefer simple, traditional methods of lacing amongst other things. In my opinion it is definitely worth giving a try. Personally, I'd rather spend less time tightening my boot laces, and more time on the hill.
