If you've ever experienced the shock of pricing a ski holiday you'll know why cheap ski holidays are the way to go. Normally by the time you buy flights, accommodation, lift passes, ski hire and transfers you'll be starting to rack up a large bill. Now start adding in meals, a few drinks and some glorious therapeutic shopping (like new ski boots, fancy hat or that stylish ski jacket). Yow I can hear that credit card screaming already.
If you know where to look and what to look for you can get some great value ski holiday deals and make your hard earned dollars go much further. Here's three things we recommend you do for a start.
1. Make reservations early or last minute
If you can plan ahead and make reservations early you can get some really good deals. It can be really hard to think ahead in summer when the last thing on your mind is skiing. But you'll congratulate yourself when you're heading off in winter on that holiday.
The other option is to book last minute - within a few days of leaving - these can be the best deals of all but often you don't have much choice of destination and if you want to go as a family or group it might hard to get everyone on board at the same time. Best option for singles and younger folks without kids.
2. Discounts and ski packages
Package deals can severely cut the price by combining air travel, with hotels, lift passes and sometimes meals as well. There are sometimes lift ticket discounts or accommodation discounts especially if you go on the shoulder season (ie. late or early) but don't want to be stuck at one resort. One of my favourite discounts is the ski hire/lift pass/lesson combination - perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers. These are often promoted by the ski fields themselves so you need to get accommodation and travel separately.
3. Pick a less popular location
I love skiing without the crowds, without the lift queues and without the hassle. Sometimes this is unavoidable if you're going to a certain resort as part of a group or family. Shop around for a smaller cheaper ski area or resort. In my opinion some of the best skiing and best deals is at the smaller resorts. You can get some great skiing without travelling half-way around the globe. For skiers who like to focus on skiing not the nightlife its important to know where the snow is and make sure you get optimum conditions. All ski resorts have websites you can look up their ski trails and facilities.
